Personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE) is a non-statutory subject. PSHE can encompass many areas of study and is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education. As Hertford St Andrew, we seek to use PSHE education to build, where appropriate, on the statutory content already outlined in the national curriculum, the basic school curriculum and in statutory guidance on: drug education, financial education, relationship and sex education (RSE) and the importance of physical activity and diet for a healthy lifestyle. (DfES. Feb 2020).Sex and relationship education is an important part of PSHE education and will become statutory in primary schools from September 2020.
At Hertford St Andrew we teach PSHE and Citizenship through the Jigsaw approach. Jigsaw PSHE brings together Personal, Social, Health and Economic education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a lesson-a-week programme. Designed as a whole school approach, Jigsaw provides a comprehensive scheme of learning for Foundation Stage to Year 6. Jigsaw holds children at its heart and its cohesive vision helps children understand and value who they are and how they fit and contribute to the world
