Sportshall Athletics

On Wednesday 7th March, sixteen boys and girls from Year 5 and 6 attended the annual Sportshall Athletics event held at Wodson Park. The event is organised by the Hertford and Ware School Sports Partnership and is always an exciting and competitive event.

After lots of practise at school over the last few weeks, the team were prepared and raring to go. We arrived to find four other schools taking their places on the banked seating area in the North Hall and we could see the different events already set up ready for the activities to start. At this point, Mrs Garbutt and I noticed that, with some of the children, nerves had taken hold and there was a sudden silence.

It was time for the first running event, which was the girl’s obstacle relay, whilst the boys made their way to their first field events. Nerves would now have to serve to support the athletes as they made their way to the starting positions. The girls who ran the first race were outstanding, giving 100% effort against very tough competition. Very quickly, all the team got into the rhythm of the event and the performances improved as we felt more and more comfortable.

There were some fantastic individual performances as well as working well as a team. Unfortunately, due to not having enough competitors it wasn’t possible for us to win the competition but all had a wonderful time and performed exceptionally well.
