The Jewish Holiday of Shavuot and the Book of Ruth
We looked at the story of Ruth, one that centres on the idea of Mitzvah; it is read during the Jewish Holiday of Shavuot to help Jewish people remember the receiving of the Ten Commandments at Mt. Sinai. We created a class acrostic poem about Shavuot and in small groups, we acted out the story of the book of Ruth with facemasks, and lolly pop characters. We also sequenced the events of the story of Ruth.
Tikkum Olam
As part of our RE learning this half term on Judaism and the importance of a Mitzvah, the children learnt about ‘Tikkun Olam’. Sometimes our world feels like it is broken. Things that are spoilt, wrong, frightening or unhappy need repairing but glue and tape will not work. All the good deeds we can do and all of God’s Mitzvot are ways to help mend the world and make it better. It is a special privilege to be allowed to help mend the world. This is called ‘Tikkun Olam’
The children learnt the chorus to
‘I’m going to fix the world (Tikkun Olam)’ by Sheldon Low.
