Mathematics

Lead Teacher: Miss Hall

At Hertford St Andrew, we understand and prioritise the importance of developing a secure and robust Maths curriculum for all children to achieve their potential.  We use White Rose to support us with teaching which coincides with the national curriculum expectations.

Children at Hertford St Andrew are given opportunities within mathematics to develop and strengthen their understanding of concepts through adaptive teaching where all children can access learning from their own starting point whilst using concrete resources to deepen cognition when transferring this knowledge into abstract form.

Regular CPD with teaching staff re-enforces shared good practise of teaching and learning whilst strengthening our awareness of how children learn, difficulties and insecurities towards maths they may face and how these challenges can be supported with all children.

Children will apply their math's skills to different scenarios, use appropriate resources for their needs and will problem solve with more confidence.  We want children to become passionate mathematicians and use mathematical language to explain their reasoning.  Children regularly revisit prior learning through our 10 for 10 daily teaching of maths fluency which exposes them to material already covered in previous lessons so these concepts will be built into their long-term memories.

Our intention is to show that children can be successful and master their maths curriculum so they can be secure in the fundamentals of each concept, drawing in their knowledge from previous learning and using this to make further connections.  Through quality first teaching, we want all children to reach their potential, so they are well-equipped for the next stage in their education.
